Upgrade Your Classic to Drive Like a Modern Car
You love the look of your classic Mustang, Camaro, or Bronco. But every time you drive it, you’re reminded of what it’s missing: the power steering that would make parking a breeze, the air conditioning that would let you cruise comfortably in the summer heat, the disc brakes that would stop the car with confidence.
Maybe you’ve inherited a classic that’s been sitting for years, or you finally bought the car you’ve always dreamed of. Either way, you want to enjoy driving it with modern comforts we enjoy today.
That’s where Restomod comes in. At Wilson Auto Repair, we’ve spent decades upgrading classic cars with modern components while preserving the vintage look that makes them special.
What is a Restomod?
A Restomod is a classic car that looks original but has been upgraded with modern components for improved performance, reliability, and comfort. As our owner Barry Wilson puts it: “This car looks like a ’65 Mustang, but it has parts in it that aren’t original.”
What does that mean in practice?
- A more powerful, fuel-injected engine that idles smooth and runs like a modern car
- An automatic overdrive transmission so you can cruise on the highway
- Disc brakes that reliably stop the car
- Power steering so parking isn’t a workout
- Air conditioning that keeps you cool
- LED headlights and taillights so you can see (and be seen) at night
To the average observer, your classic looks like it rolled off the showroom floor decades ago. But under the hood and behind the dash, it performs like a completely different machine.
Popular Restomod Upgrades
Every Restomod project is custom work. Here are the upgrades our customers request most:
Powertrain Upgrades

Engine Conversions
We install modern, fuel-injected engines that deliver more power with better reliability. For Chevrolet and GM vehicles, the LS engine is the gold standard. It idles smooth as a lawnmower until you step on the gas, then it roars like a lion. For Ford vehicles, the Coyote fuel-injected engine delivers the same modern performance.

Automatic Overdrive Conversions
Original three-speed transmissions weren’t designed for modern highway driving. We convert to automatic overdrive transmissions so you can cruise at highway speeds without running the engine at high RPMs.
Safety & Handling

Disc Brake Conversions
Many classics came with drum brakes that require constant adjustment and don’t stop well by modern standards. We install disc brake systems that deliver confident stopping power. They won’t feel like a brand-new Mercedes, but they’ll be 10 times better than what you have now.

Power Steering Conversions
This is one of our most popular upgrades. If you’ve ever tried to parallel park a classic Mustang with manual steering, you understand why. We cut and modify steering columns, relocate components, and install power steering systems based on decades of experience.
Comfort & Convenience

Air Conditioning Installation
Driving a classic in Texas without AC means arriving everywhere soaked in sweat. We install modern air conditioning systems that keep you comfortable in 107-degree heat. Important note: AC installation often requires a high-output radiator and upgraded alternator to work properly. We’ll discuss the full picture before you commit.

Modern Electronics
- LED headlights and halo lights for better visibility
- LED taillight conversions that look identical but are dramatically brighter
- Electronic gauge clusters with LED displays
- Modern stereo systems

Our Restomod Process
Step 1: Consultation
You tell us what you want: power brakes, disc brakes, power steering, AC, a new stereo – whatever improvements matter to you. We discuss the work involved and explain what to expect.
If you’re in our shop, we may demonstrate similar work on vehicles we have on hand so you can feel the difference for yourself.
Some upgrades require supporting modifications. We explain everything your project needs before you commit.
Step 2: Custom Work
Restomod work isn’t a simple parts swap. It’s custom fabrication based on decades of experience. When we install power steering in a Mustang, we’re cutting the steering column, relocating components, and fitting everything together based on knowing exactly how these cars work.
This expertise comes from doing the same work successfully on hundreds of vehicles. We know which modifications work, which parts fit, and how to make everything function together reliably.
Step 3: Delivery
You get your classic back with modern drivability. It looks the same. It sounds like a classic. But it drives and feels more like a modern vehicle you can enjoy driving in the 21st century.

Four Decades of Restomod Experience
Experience You Can See
Come look around our shop. Check out the vehicles we’re working on. Compare us to the guy who’s half the price with a car in the corner covered in so much dust you can’t tell what color it is. Pick the right shop first, then discuss price.
No Shortcuts
Restomod work is custom fabrication. There’s no template for making a ’65 Mustang accept power steering or fitting a modern LS engine into a classic Chevy. You need technicians who’ve done this work successfully—many times—and know exactly how to make everything fit and function.
Honest Communication
We explain everything upfront: what the work involves, what to expect from the results, what supporting modifications you’ll need, and realistic timelines. No surprises.
Common Questions About Restomods
How long does a Restomod take?
It depends on scope. Simple upgrades like disc brake conversions might take a few weeks. Comprehensive projects involving engine swaps, AC installation, and multiple upgrades can take anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. Add-ons during the project extend the timeline, and many customers end up adding things once they see what’s possible.
How much does Restomod work cost?
Pricing varies based on what you want done. We discuss your project and provide pricing based on the specific upgrades you’re requesting and any supporting work required.
Will Restomod upgrades affect my car's value?
Today, quality Restomod work typically adds value. The market has shifted. Buyers used to prioritize “numbers matching” original cars, but now many people want classics they can actually drive around during everyday life. A properly done Restomod with modern components like an LS engine is often worth more than an original with an old carbureted setup that leaks oil and runs rough.
What's the difference between LS and Coyote engines?
LS engines are GM’s modern fuel-injected V8s. They’re the engine of choice for Chevrolet and GM vehicles. Coyote engines are Ford’s equivalent for Mustangs and Ford classics. Both offer modern reliability, smooth idle, and serious power when you step on the gas.
Can I just do one or two upgrades, or do I need to do everything at once?
You can absolutely do upgrades individually. Many customers start with power steering or disc brakes, then come back later for air conditioning or engine work. We’ll let you know if any upgrade requires supporting modifications to work properly.
Will my classic still look original after Restomod work?
That’s the whole point. To the average person, your car looks exactly like it did when it was new. The upgrades are hidden under the hood, behind the dash, and integrated into the existing structure. You get modern drivability in a classic package.
